Why Certification with One Spirit

One Spirit is widely recognized as a respected leader in the field of Interfaith Interspiritual Counseling and Companioning, with over 20 years of demonstrated excellence in spiritual and transformative education. Your Certificate with us demonstrates the professional skills and ethical standards of the highest quality and places you at the forefront of the field.

Is a Spiritual Counseling Certification the Same as Licensing?

It is easy to confuse private credentialing, also known as certification, with government licensure because the terms are frequently used interchangeably. But they have important differences. Licensure is only available for state-regulated professions through agency oversight. Currently, there is no government license available for the spiritual counseling or companioning field. Certification, on the other hand, can be granted by any private organization considered to be a leader in the professional space. While not required to practice, certification from esteemed organizations can help clients distinguish the quality of training obtained by a practitioner in an unregulated field.

Spiritual Counseling Certification Overview

Our certification is at the forefront of the interspiritual and interfaith movement. It provides the best spiritual education for agents of change in our world.  It’s grounded in the understanding that there is a core spirituality that transcends differences in our beliefs, backgrounds, and life experiences.

Thus, as you study to develop your skills as a Spiritual Counselor in our professional development program, you will participate in heart-centered, intellectually stimulating learning experiences that enhance your skills in Interspiritual Counseling and Interspiritual Companioning.

An interspiritual focus gives you the opportunity to support clients of any background, making it the most open, inclusive, and loving approach

Our certification is not only for those who may be seeking to build a private practice in spiritual counseling or interspiritual companioning, but also for individuals working in complementary fields such as social work, mental health, holistic wellness, education, and health care.

Students in a variety of careers have found great value in professional development that enhances their ability to support others in ways that honor their full humanity and spiritual journey, including counselors, nonprofit professionals, community advocates, psychologists, teachers, art therapists, public servants, yoga and movement instructors, human resource specialists, energy workers, clergy, medical practitioners, and those who may be transitioning from other fields.

“We have discovered that spiritual companioning is a humbling path. We are humbled by your journey and the privilege of traveling alongside you. As you descend and climb, we are honored to hold the lantern. In the doing and the being, spiritual counseling is itself a spiritual practice, connecting us to the All That Is as we walk with you.”

 - Excerpt from Lyena Strelkoff’s 2023 Commencement address.

Lyena is a One Spirit Interspiritual Companioning and Counseling Program graduate, class of 2022. With a passion for guiding others on their spiritual journeys, Lyena's commencement speech is an inspiring testament to the transformative power of compassion and connection. Our community exhibits openness, mutual respect, empathy, and a willingness to challenge assumptions. These traits will enable you to hold space for your clients better.

Skill Development

You’ll learn how to listen deeply, how to facilitate spiritual growth, and how to embody sacred presence and service for your clients.

“The ISCC program gave me the confidence and skills to enter a whole new and amazing phase of my work with others. My time in the program helped bring a sense of grounding and clarity in my own gifts that I’d never thought possible.”

- Jay Waxenerg
Training Program Director,
Center for Medicinal Mindfulness

Here is what you’ll gain in our program:

  • Develop your confidence as an Interspiritual Counselor or Companion

  • Learn to be truly present and authentic with yourself and with your clients

  • Listen deeply and improve your listening skills

  • Become an effective spiritual change agent for the world

  • Grow your own spirituality so that you can help others do the same

Spiritual Counseling Certification Curriculum

Through One Spirit’s Interspiritual Companioning and Counseling program, you will develop five foundational competencies:

  • Commitment to Personal Interspirituality

  • Embodiment of Sacred Presence and Service

  • Active Respect and Inclusion of Others

  • Cultivation of Personal Ethical Behavior

  • Facilitation of Spiritual Growth

In support of these 5 core spiritual counseling core competencies, you will engage in several other specific areas of study, including the following.

Essential Interspiritual Companioning and Spiritual Counseling Skills

Learn key concepts and practices that are fundamental to serving as a skilled Interspiritual Companion/Counselor. These practices will be integrated throughout ISCC, with the aim of promoting continual learning and skill development:

  • understanding interspirituality

  • maintaining a personal practice

  • sacred inquiry

  • listening

  • shadow work

  • cultural competency

  • self care

Awareness and Engagement

Explore how to authentically engage your clients with a perspective of wholeness, self-awareness, and connection.

Engagement only works with keen awareness of appropriate ethical boundaries and power dynamics in companioning and counseling relationships. You’ll learn to identify these boundaries and dynamics so that you can effectively manage them in your work.

Handling Common Issues in Interspiritual Companioning and Counseling

We want to ensure that you are able to handle the most common client scenarios with confidence. This will give you the skills you need to engage fully in these circumstances. These include:

  • life transitions

  • relationships as healing

  • grief and loss

  • forgiveness

  • work-related stress

  • seeking clarity about one’s purpose.

Students will also engage in practices that can be used to companion others in supportive, culturally responsive ways when these issues emerge.

Practical Client Tools

Students will be introduced to a variety of tools and methods designed to assist those they companion. You will learn tools that will support your spiritual counseling clients to:

  • connect with their inner wisdom, intuition, and authentic selves

  • inviting Divine guidance and assistance

  • deepening their experience of the Sacred

  • embracing their wholeness

Supporting Your Practice

In addition, our program will help you apply your skills in various professional roles and provide guidance on establishing  a private practice and in doing group work.

Spiritual Counseling Certification Requirements

Students are awarded a Certificate as an Interspiritual Companion and Counselor after the successful completion of the core curriculum, concentration track, and final certification review. Together these components take one year to complete.

Core Curriculum

All Spiritual Counseling Students will complete the core curriculum, which consists of

  • Residential Intensive at the start of the program.

  • 23 live classes that are held every other Saturday.

  • eLearning modules featuring video and audio presentations, reflective exercises, and homework assignments that prepare students for each live class.

  • 3 or more credits of electives to deepen areas of interest.

  • Monthly peer study group meetings.

  • Monthly mentoring with a program supervisor.

  • Participation in individual interspiritual companioning or spiritual counseling sessions facilitated by a One Spirit approved practitioner.

  • Developing, maintaining, and following a self-care plan.

  • Conducting interspiritual companioning or interspiritual counseling sessions with assigned pro-bono clients.

Applied Interspiritual Companioning

We also include three Concentration focuses for deeper development of Interspiritual Companioning and Spiritual Counseling skills and how they can be applied not only in a spiritual companioning practice but also broader applications in serving others. The topics were selected based on the feedback of our community as how to best prepare students to meet the current, most pressing challenges in the world.

  • We understand there is a spiritual dimension to our present ecological crisis. For too long we have neglected or viewed Nature as a resource to do with as we saw fit. A new worldview is dawning upon us, though: We are integral to the health and well-being of all life. How then, do we reconnect with what we feel we have lost, or never connected with in the first place? How can we recognize the interconnectedness of all life?

This concentration will provide an experiential journey into Nature as Spirit manifest in the world. Eco-Spirituality will guide us in seeing the cosmic journey we are all on, so that we may be spiritual guides companioning other seekers to realize this journey.

    Learn More!

  • In this concentration, participants will explore the history, diverse concepts, and practical application of Spiritual Activism. Through a multicultural lens, the exploration will examine its origins, the relationship with standard forms of faith and spirituality, and how it has evolved from the late 19th century to the present.

Participants will explore the art of Interspiritual companioning and spiritual counseling through the lens of spiritual activism. They will consider how spiritual activism contributes to societal transformation in a personal context, one on one companioning or counseling, or working in group settings.

    Learn More!

  • The workplace has, for many, become a profane space led by a singular, bottom-line focus. We have a sense that discussions of faith are not welcome (at best) or illegal (at worst). And yet, inherent within the gathering of humans is the creative potential of the sacred.

This concentration examines the variety of ways that are emerging within the workplace to engage with the fullness of the spiritual lives of workers.

During this concentration, we will discuss the various intersections between spiritual companioning and elements of the workplace. For example management theory, diversity, working in teams, leadership, influencing, sustainability, mentoring, and more.

We will also explore our own personal development as spiritually mature leaders working to navigate the ineffable.

Final Certification Review

As the premiere Spiritual Counseling Certification program, we conduct a final review of each student because we hold high standards. The final certification review ensure each student meets the 5 core competencies, has satisfactorily completed all coursework, and is fully prepared to serve as an effective spiritual counselor or interspiritual companion.

Qualifications for enrollment

We are committed to diversity and welcome all qualified adults to apply. All applicants are given full consideration regardless of age, gender identity, race, religion, ethnic background, national origin, socioeconomic status, disability, sexual orientation, or any other characteristic protected by law.

Each applicant will be assessed individually, and acceptance into the program is based on:

  • emotional and spiritual maturity

  • the applicant’s character

  • personal goals

  • experience and study of interfaith and interspiritual perspectives

If we feel that you need additional interfaith or interspiritual experience to become a successful interspiritual counselor, you’ll be invited to complete the first year of One Spirit's Seminary program. This will give you the foundation and experience with interfaith and interspiritual studies to become a well qualified Spiritual Counselor and successfully complete the certification. A second interview will be held upon completion of the prerequisite training.

Ideally, we are seeking students who demonstrate the following qualities:

  • We expect our students to maintain a serious and abiding commitment to their spiritual life.

This includes a desire to deepen their understanding and experience of the spiritual; an interest in integrating Spirit into all aspects of life; recognition that there are many valid spiritual paths and practices based on culturally diverse faith and wisdom traditions; the cultivation of intuitive insight and wisdom.

  • Students should desire to be of service in the world. They should live as an expression of loving, compassionate action.

  • We seek students who have a professional history or life experience that demonstrates cultivating authentic, supportive connections.

Students should have strong interpersonal skills, an engaging and affirming presence, the ability to consistently communicate in ways that convey mindfulness, respect, and empathy, and excellent listening skills.

  • Students understand that spiritual guides and leaders are not able to hold space for others that they do not hold for themselves.

They should have a clear sense of their personal values, strengths, and growing edges.

They should set realistic goals and honor commitments.

  • Our students demonstrate a commitment to ongoing learning and personal growth. They understand that their development does not end, but rather begins with their spiritual counseling certification.

  • Students demonstrated open-mindedness and a non-judgmental perspective. They treat others with acceptance and without prejudice.

  • Students demonstrate the ability to receive and offer thoughtful, constructive feedback. They accept personal accountability and shared responsibility for promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion, including a willingness to address personal, group, and institutional biases with intention.

Additional Requirements

  • English fluency: All course materials are in the English language. As a result, written and spoken English fluency is required.

  • Technology: A computer or laptop with a webcam, microphone and stable internet connection are needed to participate in online classes and meetings via Zoom. You will also need them to access the online student portal (ClanEd) for course communications and learning content.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • The ISCC program core curriculum classes meet roughly every other Saturday from 11 AM - 5 PM ET. There are three full weekend classes, at the start, in the middle, and at the end of the program. You can find the class dates for the upcoming cohort here: ISCC Class Dates

In addition, each student is required to take (only) one Concentration at the end of the 9.5-month core curriculum. The dates are listed on the same page as above.

  • The program begins with an in person 2 night intensive at STony Point Center in Stony Point, NY. The remainder of the ISCC classes are offered via Zoom video conference in real-time. Classes are recorded in the rare case that a student needs to miss a class.

  • Yes, the very first weekend from late Friday afternoon through Sunday afternoon takes place at an in-person intensive. This helps to build a strong connection in the cohort that is vital to the shared knowledge and learning for everyone’s growth and benefit.

  • One Spirit has been offering live-streaming classes since before Zoom even existed. Over ten years and countless class hours, our teams have cultivated practices and techniques to keep the technology in the background, so our experiential learning is front and center. Our dedicated media team runs all the technological components of the classes so our presenters, staff, and students can focus on the deep work offered and engage with each other. Engaging in real-time allows you to be intimately involved in each class and participate in breakout groups with your fellow students and practicum sessions to gain real experience. You'll also have large group discussions with the entire class and interact with the co-facilitators.

  • To help create this sense of strong connection, we start the program with a short in person intensive. And we see the squares of videos on Zoom not as boxes or walls but as windows, allowing us to meet our neighbors from around the world in thoughtful and intimate ways. We've learned that the presence felt in physical space and the inner work needed to create that space is also possible on Zoom. Spiritual companionship regularly occurs over Zoom, and extends possibilities for companionship internationally. Our students find the training to be a rich and a life-enhancing experience. They develop a strong sense of spiritual community with their classmates and colleagues over the course of the program.

  • The ISCC program is designed as a professional training program that can be successfully completed while maintaining a full-time job. However, to thrive in this program, a clear commitment of time and intention is required. We find that those who get the full benefit of the training are those who have created space in their life to be fully engaged and participate at all levels.

  • The time commitment of the 9.5-month Core Curriculum can vary significantly from student to student, depending on their level of engagement with the materials. The monthly average amount of time commitment is 35-45 hours. This includes 12 hours per month class time, eLearning modules with an average of 6-10 hours per month, study group which meets once or twice a month for at least one hour, monthly supervision sessions, pro-bono companioning, and receiving personal interspiritual companioning. A minimum of three credits of elective classes are also required. At the end of the core curriculum, students must also participate in a Concentration described below.

  • We engage in in-class practicum sessions with your fellow students. These sessions are conducted in small groups with an experienced Supervisor. While the practical experience of offering companioning is vital to growing the skills needed, watching these sessions also offers great benefit for the students to witness different styles and approaches to companioning. These are safe spaces to explore the themes learned from the eLearning modules and try out the skills presented.

  • A Concentration Track allows for deeper development of Interspiritual Companioning/Counseling skills in a chosen area. They are offered at the completion of the 9.5-month Core Curriculum. Each concentration track consists of six live class sessions and corresponding eLearning modules. Students are required to choose (only) one concentration.

  • Yes, though students are discouraged from missing class as it inhibits the sense of community and sharing of perspectives that’s so important to the program. Students are disallowed to miss more than 4 classes.

  • All students are assigned a Supervisor who provides support and feedback throughout the program. Supervisors also provide guidance around the preparation for interspiritual companioning and supervision for your pro-bono companioning sessions. Study group members provide peer support as well.

You are also required to receive private personal spiritual companioning with an approved provider from our curated list. This is not only beneficial for the experience of personally being companioned, but it is another area of support for your explorations in the ISCC program.

  • Your study group is your small group within the larger community. Participation is required and can be in-person (in those instances where there are several students in geographical proximity to each other), by conference call, or on an online platform such as Zoom or Skype. It's a place to further delve into the topics being explored and try out techniques and tools being developed during the course of the program.

  • In addition to the types of support listed previously, each ISCC cohort has a private, interactive class website. The class website is also the place where students come together to access the eLearning modules and handouts, and to build community with one another.

  • As an opportunity to have practical, real experience and develop your skills as an Interspiritual Companion/Counselor, students work with two volunteers as companions to receive interspiritual companioning/counseling. The volunteers are paired with the students by our Companioning Coordinators. Between your two pro bono companions, you'll have a minimum of 10 sessions during the 9.5-month core curriculum.

You will also have private supervision with your Supervisor concerning these pro-bono sessions once they begin. The schedule and frequency for these are worked out between the student and the Supervisor and these sessions are included in the program tuition.

  • Students are required to participate in receiving private interspiritual companioning and counseling with someone from our approved list of practitioners. These professionals have agreed to offer their services on a sliding scale to our students. We encourage students to consult with more than one to find someone they are comfortable working with and whose fees are affordable for them. You'll need to have a minimum of eight sessions during the 9.5 months of the core curriculum.

  • If you're already working with a spiritual director, the co-facilitators will ask to meet them, if they don't already know them. We do that to ensure they align with and understand the program and can support you as needed during the program.

  • No. We offer certificates of completion upon graduation. We are a professional training program rather than an academic institution.

  • In order to successfully participate in this program you will need: a personal (not shared) email address, a computer with high speed internet access (to download the handouts, homework and view video recordings and to use Zoom), and Microsoft Word, Google Docs or equivalent software. All homework assignments are submitted online through the class portal Wisdom Web. For specific computer or device system requirements please go here: System Requirements. For the fullest experience as a companion learner, you will also need a webcam and headset with microphone.

In general, you should have a working knowledge of using computers to:

    • Author documents in a word processor.

    • Browse and search for files on your computer or tablet.

    • Convert or Save documents to PDF.

    • Download and install apps on your computer or tablet.

    • Set, remember and use passwords and reset them if necessary.

    • Keep your operating system, browser and other software up to date.

    • Search the Internet for solutions when you need to learn how to do something.

    • Get technical support in your local community if something doesn't work.

  • Class size varies, with approximately 40-55 students enrolled each year.

  • During each year of study, One Spirit offers a variety of elective classes (listed as Workshops on the website - Live or Streaming) that allow students to self-direct a portion of their education and focus on areas that are of interest or on subjects that support their call to serve. Electives supplement the core curriculum and allow for deeper exploration. All students are required to take a minimum of three elective credits in each year of study with eight hour of class time equaling one credit. These electives are generally held for either one weekend day, a full weekend, or two hours over multiple weekday evenings. The electives are included in your tuition. Our elective classes are also open to the public. All are offered via Zoom video conference and video recording.

  • ISCC is co-facilitated by Rev. Dr. Khadijah Matin, Rev. Dr. Ed O'Malley, and Rev. Nathan Brisby along with the ISCC supervisors. The eLearning modules offer a wide and diverse range of voices speaking on the many topics explored in the curriculum.

  • Bear in mind, that your financial status has no bearing on your acceptance into the ISCC program. Beginning in the late Fall of 2021, One Spirit took the very bold step of creating the Fair Share Tuition System. This honor-based plan transparently shares the cost of educating a student in our program and gives people the opportunity to pay what they can afford. No forms, applications, or questions are asked. Upon acceptance, students will be asked to self-assess a level of tuition (which includes program tuition, supervision, 4-credits to use for elective workshops, and one required concentration track) that has meaningful value to them based on all that is included and choose the tuition option which best reflects that. Your Tuition Payment Agreement (sent with your registration materials after you are accepted into our program) will give you in-depth information about this and also offer you different payment plans. Not included in tuition are personal interspiritual companioning sessions, fees are paid directly to the provider.
