This workshop gives participants an in-depth understanding of the spirituality of the Twelve Steps to:

  • Learn practical techniques for incorporating spiritual principles into our daily lives. 

  • Explore addiction from its cultural and scientific basis while working within a supportive spiritual framework provided by the world's religions, indigenous practices, and the words of the mystics, both ancestral and contemporary.

  • Navigate our place within the Hero's Journey and explore and deepen our relationship with a Higher Power of our understanding. 

Although the course will utilize the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous, the solution focus will apply to all forms of addiction (substance or process.) Multiple genres and the lens of numerous spiritual practices will invite those identifying as spiritual/religious, agnostic, or atheist to attend and feel supported.

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Learn practical techniques for incorporating spiritual principles into daily life

  • Connect with others in recovery who share a commitment to spiritual growth

This workshop is ideal for:

  • Anyone at any stage in examining personal addiction and seeking ways to alleviate unnecessary suffering

  • Individuals in recovery from addiction

  • Family members and loved ones of individuals in recovery

  • Healthcare professionals and addiction counselors

  • Anyone interested in learning more about the spiritual aspects of recovery from addiction

Workshop Format

This online workshop offers a mix of presentations, interactive exercises, and group discussions. Participants can ask questions and share their experiences with the 12 Steps and spirituality.  


FACULTY:

Rev. Dr. Natalie Coe

Rev. Dr. Natalie Coe was ordained as an interfaith minister by One Spirit Learning Alliance in NYC in 2017, and is a One Spirit in Recovery facilitator. She was appointed Associate Minister of the First Congregational Church of Fair Haven, VT, in 2021. 12-Step Spirituality is part of her everyday living, and her sobriety and spiritual condition are deeply interconnected. She has just completed her first full-length book of poetry, on my way home, walking in recovery. As an academic, Dr. Coe taught for nearly 20 years at Green Mountain College in Poultney, VT. As a professor, she created a variety of highly engaging courses in biology, chemistry, psychology, and religion. She received a BS in Chemistry from the University of Vermont and PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Minnesota.  In August of 2023, she began the MFA program in creative writing at the University of North Carolina in Wilmington. Her scientific articles, creative nonfiction and poems have appeared in a variety of journals, including Forests, Conservation Genetics, Writing for Education, Her Words, and in various books & collections.
